Traditionally, a Bill of lading is a contract that establishes an agreement between a shipper and a transportation company for the transportation of goods. It contains all the information about the items on board that need to be delivered together with the signature upon delivery (proof of delivery). The bill of lading (BOL) includes mileage and fuel information. The driver has to fill in the information about the vehicle, odom beginning and ending, load and unload time, and all the customer information. This way, the driver spends hours filling out paperwork. Paper BOLs take time to process which in turn causes delays invoicing the customer and getting paid for the job done. Drivers are gone for many days taking the paper documents with them, and when they go back to the office, they do not remember some details that are required to invoice the customer. Moreover, paper can get lost, it’s hard to understand handwriting and mistakes are inevitable. That being said, nowadays specialists are moving towards the adoption of electronic bills of lading, or e-BOL, with great eagerness.

The driver receives the job and fills in the data on vehicle, job starting time, ending time. The mileage and fuel are calculated automatically. So does the driver’s work time. Upon delivery, the driver gives the mobile device or a tablet to the customer who signs the e-BOL, and swoosh it is emailed to the office right away. The office can process this bill of lading instantaneously and create the invoice for the customer. With electronic BOLs transportation companies can get paid faster.
